As Safe as a (Amadea) House PDF Print E-mail

18 Children aged between 1 – 8 years call the Amadea Safe House in Pretoria North home. Some of the children are abandoned, neglected, abused and/or HIV-positive and in desperate need of extra care and treatment.

For the past 20 years this place of safety has been managed by the Malan couple and their family; Mrs. Rina Malan, foster mother extraordinaire, estimates the current cost of keeping the House operational at around R33 000 a month, covering only the bare necessities.

After visiting the Safe House it becomes apparent that even though some of the children will remain underdeveloped and will always struggle to fulfill their potential because of the high cost involved, they cannot be loved more or taken care of better. “Some of them, specifically the disabled ones, will most probably never be adopted, but luckily they are able to stay at this facility for as long as is necessary,” says Mrs. Malan.

Integrat donated money towards buying groceries and also took stuffed animals and toys and will be assisting in the raising of funds for this registered non-profit organization. Claudia Jordaan, Integrat Project Administrator, had the following to say: “It was a wonderful experience being involved in the community, and this way weren’t only reaching out, we were connecting."

Christmas Project:

On the afternoon of the 20th of November the Integrat volunteers organised a Christmas party for the 20 foster children at Amadea House of Safety in Pretoria North.  They are aged between 1 and 8 and some of them are severely handicapped.

We had our very own Santa Clause for the day and the children were beside themselves with excitement!  They each received a present which was made up especially for each of them (since we received a wish list from their foster mom beforehand).  They were also treated with cake and sweets.  Once again though, the quality time spent with them was the greatest blessing.  If all people could see a less privileged child’s face after receiving a Christmas present, there would be far less children who don’t. I would just once again like to thank the wonderful volunteers who make these outings special and who have sacrificed their comfort to bless someone else.  Claudia JordaanCharity Project Coordinator
