| Love in Action: Refilwe Community Project | | Print | |
|
During the month of October, Integrat had the opportunity to experience love in action, or rather, the gift of love, when we visited the Refilwe (meaning ‘gift’ in Tswana) Project in Lanseria. Since its founding in 1991, Refilwe has grown to become a huge endeavour that aids hundreds of people daily by addressing critical medical, child care and education needs in the community and also by developing life and specific skills training and income generating activities. Furthermore, Refilwe’s day care centre alone caters to more than a hundred toddlers; at the centre they receive love, education, discipline, food and shelter. The people at Refilwe run their projects via donations from the public, but are also an innovative bunch when it comes to raising funds and creating a self-sustaining environment for the project. For example: they have beautiful vegetable gardens, a pigsty and lavatories designed specifically for generating compost from human waste. Integrat was able to donate groceries and clothes, whilst CEO Norman Parkin, in his personal capacity, donated R3000 towards taking the children on a sea side holiday. As with all the charity organisations that we have visited and supported in the past: our support is not a once-off event – our support of the Refilwe Project is based on the same principle.
