WASPA (The Wireless Application Service Provider’s Association) was launched on 26 August 2004. WAPSA not only aims to represent its members, but also to allow the public to make use of mobile content services with confidence. Mobile content providers are aware of the fact that they should adhere to WASPA’s advertising guidelines. These guidelines fill a whopping 221 pages, which must seem quite daunting. It’s not as bad as it seems since one should take into account that WASPA must cater for all advertising mediums.   Visit http://www.waspa.org.za/code/advert-rules.shtml to view the various subdivisions of media as shown below.

The content layout usually pays attention to the size and positioning of costs and term and conditions. The guidelines require advertisements to be designed in such a way that the cost is displayed directly above, below or adjacent to the short code. General terms and conditions for disclosure which differs with each advertising medium utilized may include the following:
  • Number Of Text Messages To Be Received Or Sent Per Time Period - Mandatory text: eg “3 SMS/week” - Note: Numeric values must be used to indicate the number
  • Indicate If WAP/GPRS Are Required: Mandatory text: “Network+WAP charges extra”.
  • Indicate If Incomplete Transactions Are Still Billable Mandatory text: ”Errors billed”
  • If A Subscription, Indicate The Access Channel Number To Stop A Subscription Mandatory text: “Send Stop 31234”
  • Indicate Advertiser Company Name: Mandatory text: “XYZ Company”
  • Advertiser Help Phone Number Details - Mandatory text: “Help 0xx-123-4567” or “Help 08x-222-1345 (VAS)”.  Only South African phone numbers may be used. No voicemail boxes may be used. No Premium Rated Numbers may be used
  • Location Of Full T&C: Mandatory text: “T&C at xyz.co.za”
  • If A Competition, Indicate When Competition Closes: Mandatory text: “Competition Closes 1 Jan 20— ”
